TWO talented teenagers beat the opposition to take the top slots in a design competition.

Becky Hissett and Harianne Errington, textile students at Hetton School, beat more than 250 hopefuls from across the country to take first and second place in the national Technical Textile Competition 2011.

The competition was run by the Industrial Trust and supported by the Drapers’ Company.

It aimed to encouraging young people to show their ingenuity and creativity with modern day textiles.

Teacher Lucy Blackie said the school was thrilled when the two 16-year-olds, who are studying textiles at GCSE in Year 11, were chosen as finalists and got the chance to go to London for the finals.

She said it was brilliant when Becky took first place with her design for a laptop case and Harianne took the second place for her phone cover design.

Ms Blackie said both girls chose to use the same shock absorber material, D30, which changes from flexible to solid on impact, for their designs, which really impressed the judges.

She said: “We are thrilled for both the girls, and the whole school is really, really proud of them.

“Just for them to get into the final was amazing, but for both of them to be winners was fantastic.”

Ms Blackie said the idea behind the competition was to introduce the next generation of textile workers to the most up-to-date fabrics and materials.

She added: “If the young people get used to modern materials now, then they will be able to work easily with them when they go into the workplace.”

As well as a trophy, Becky won £500, which she is going to use to buy a new laptop, and an activity day of her choice. Harianne won a laptop case.

About the editor.

Dr John Williams is a Senior Lecturer in the Textiles Engineering and Materials (TEAM) group, De Montfort University, UK. He has published numerous scientific papers and several book chapters dealing with protective clothing. Dr Williams has also presented numerous academic lectures internationally. He is a member of many groups including Euratex and TechniTex.

Five consumer products ranging from a unique floor-cleaning pad to a disposable bra liner have been nominated as finalists for the 2012 Visionary Award.

Now in its 11th year, the Visionary Award, which is given annually to a new consumer product that utilizes nonwoven fabrics in its final form, will be presented at the VISION 2012 Consumer Products Conference, January 23-26, 2012 at the Hotel Intercontinental in New Orleans, Louisiana. Munich / Potsdam, Germany, September 7, 2011 / B3C newswire / - AMSilk and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP) join forces in the current development of a novel spin process for making high performance fibers from AMSilk’s spider silk proteins. AMSilk is the first company able to deliver sufficient spider silk material for applications development. AMSilk’s spider silk is inspired by the natural silk from spiders and produced through biotechnology with an industrial production platform. To date, no industrial spinning process has delivered a fiber that can be compared to natural spider silk as found in a spider web. The present collaboration will match AMSilk’s material and biochemical expertise with Fraunhofer’s expertise in developing spin processes for biopolymers. The partners expect to deliver a new process for making artificial spider silk fibers for high tech applications.

The issue of sustainable development has become a global trend, especially after the United Nations in 2005 named sustainable development one of its long-term missions, and after the Executive Yuan passed the “National Carbon Reduction Plan.” As the nation's leading textile R&D agency, Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI) in May helped G-Fun Industrial Corp. get eight of its products certified by the British Standards Institute (BSI) for carbon footprint mitigation. On July 8, TTRI held a ceremony in which BSI issued the certificate to G-Fun. The event also saw BSI signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with TTRI, which will become an important partner of the British Standards Institute in Taiwan.

G-Fun is a technical textile manufacturer which, with the assistance of TTRI, obtained the BSI PAS 2050:2008 certificate for eight of its products. With the certificate, G-Fun products are “completely certified,” as opposed to products that are only “partially certified” through less stringent certification processes.

G-Fun has worked on waterproof technical textiles for over 10 years and is a leader in the industry, marketing its products to the rest of the world with its brand “G-TEX.” In fact, according to many, G-Fun is to the textile industry as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is to the integrated circuit industry.

While running a successful business and raking in big bucks in the process, G-Fun chairman Tsai Chiu-hsiung hasn't forgotten his corporate social responsibility by developing products using environment-friendly, non-toxic and biodegradable ingredients. The firm's application of the BSI PAS 2050 certificate represents its commitment to sustainable development.

TTRI, meanwhile, founded its carbon footprint reduction committee in 2010 and signed an MOU with BSI in August of that year, agreeing to help local firms get green product-related certificates. As for the future, TTRI will help manufacturers obtain not only the PAS 2050 certificate but also the PAS 2060 and ISO 50001 ones.

During the ceremony Friday, TTRI and BSI signed a new MOU, which will provide more BSI certification opportunities to Taiwan manufacturers and help them raise their visibility in the international stage.

COLBOND ANNOUNCES COLBACK PRICE INCREASE

Arnhem, the Netherlands (February 10, 2011) Colbond today announced a price increase of at least 5% for its Colback nonwovens. The adjustment is due to the ongoing sharp rise of raw materials, energy and transportation costs and will be made with immediate effect. The company is informing its customers worldwide on a regional basis accordingly.

Since 2009 weve been faced with significant raw material cost increases which we managed to absorb until the announcement of price increases in November of last year said Harry Verbakel, Director Sales & Marketing. Since then there have been further double-digit raw material price hikes across the board with as much as a 20% price increase for polyester, one of the core ingredients for Colback. We therefore are forced to increase our Colback prices on such a short notice.

Due to the high volatility in the raw material markets, the company will review price levels on a monthly basis and intends to apply a variable surcharge if raw material costs continue to rise even further.

Taiyo Kogyo Group is today celebrating the successful completion of three new stadium roofs supplied for this year's FIFA World Cup festivities in South Africa. Under the bright, open MakMax roofs, twenty three matches in total, including the semi-final and third-place match will be held.

Five of the ten venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup were purpose built. Of those five stadiums, three are clad in Taiyo Kogyo Group produced and installed tensile membrane roofs.
Birdair (NY, USA) manufactured and installed the steel frames, cables and membrane at Cape Town and Durban Stadiums. Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium was a joint effort with Birdair providing the steel frame, Taiyo Kogyo (Osaka, Japan) manufacturing the membrane and Taiyo Membrane Corporation (Queensland, Australia) installing the membrane.
The reliable architectural fabric such as PTFE coated glass fiber membrane is used making them durable, resistant to the severe meteorological environment of this country. The heat reflective and optical transparency properties of this fabric allow the audience seating area to remain bright and comfortable. Distinguishing design made possible by the lightweight property of the fabric, has created new and exciting skylines in host cities across South Africa.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth was the first to be completed among those newly-built stadiums celebrating the completion in June 2009. This stadium located at North End Lake has a characteristic looks with the combination of membrane and metallic panels. At this stadium, eight matches including the quarter-final and third-place match will be held.
At Durban Stadium located in a tourist city on the Indian Ocean coast, the 350-meter-long and 100-meter-high arch has a dominating presence. This dynamic shape is made possible using approximately 46,000 square meters of fabric, many high tension cables, and one enormous steel arch supporting the structure. Seven matches including the semi-final will be held here.
Cape Town Stadium has a mesh membrane liner underneath the glass roof. This not only improves the function, including noise reduction and solar heat transfer reduction, but also creates a beautiful interior with indirect lighting effects at night. Here at this stadium, eight matches including the quarter-final and another semi-final will be held.

Course Overview.

The MSc Advanced Materials is for you if you are a scientist looking to further develop your skills and knowledge in the field of advanced materials.

You will be working with modern and advanced materials and have the opportunity to extend your understanding of the methodologies and applications used in high technology and science-based industries. You will use your already extensive understanding of the properties and behaviour of materials in order to envisage and devise novel applications in response to technological problems and shortcomings.

This is a unique and flexible course in which you may choose to specialise in a particular area of advanced materials. Alternatively, you may study a combination of modules from any of the five pathways which will result in a non-specific award of MSc in Advanced Materials.

The department will also consider the development of a tailor-made module if you are in a particular group of students with an interest in a specific area, for example one that that is relevant to the organisation in which you are working.

About the course.

The course offers five distinct pathways. Each pathway consists of an individual project and four taught modules. Teaching for each module is delivered as a short-course lasting no more than ten days.

If you do not wish to select a specific pathway you may choose a combination of modules from any of the five pathways. This will lead to a non-specific award of MSc in Advanced Materials.

Written work for each module is in the form of an assignment or an integrated learning package (ILP) and consists of three parts, each with set times and deadlines for submission. This work may take the form of essays, assignments, projects, seminars and case study analysis. It is assessed in parts and feedback will be given during the allocated period of self study.

Key skills will be developed, and assessed at appropriate stages during each part of the assignment. Oral presentation of ILPs will be required in all modules.

You will be required to complete the ILP within three months of finishing the module to be awarded full credits.

Individual project work will be undertaken within your workplace wherever possible, ensuring relevance to the employer, access to appropriate facilities and allowing sufficient time to be spent on practical work. Where this is not feasible, projects may be based and carried out at the university.

Each module with its completed integrated learning package is worth 30 credits and your project is worth 60 credits. Accumulation of 180 credits in total leads to the award of MSc.

The course is very flexible in terms of your options for study as you can choose a particular pathway which leads to a specific qualification or you may choose a combination of modules from any of the five pathways which will lead to a non-specific award of MSc in Advanced Materials.

Teaching for each module is delivered as a short-course that will last no more than ten days. The rest of your study is very flexible and may be carried out away from the university.

Class sizes are small which means you will be able to work closely with your fellow students and your tutor.

Your subject of study and your personal project means you have the opportunity to work in an area that is of personal interest or that is related to your career.

If you choose to progress to doctoral studies at the university after graduation on the MSc, you are only required to pay for two years of your PhD.

What you will learn.

You will build on your understanding of modern and advanced materials and the methodologies and applications used in high technology and science-based industries, equipping you with the potential to lead future developments in the field of advanced materials.

You will develop your knowledge so that you are able to relate the physical and chemical structure of materials to their macroscopic properties and provide an insight into materials requirements for current scientific and commercial applications.

Your prior knowledge and understanding in your field will enable you to envisage and devise novel applications – particularly for high technology materials – and develop diagnostic and novel approaches to technological problems and shortcomings through the interdisciplinary use of materials.

Your studies will include considerations of the technological, environmental, economical and cultural factors that may influence material choice, manufacturing design, processing conditions and mode of application.

The natural super absorbent polymers created by Exotech can be used for a range of environmentally friendly products that can do anything from treat obesity, to irrigate plants.
Shed weight safely without surgery; grow crops with less water; heal wounds more quickly; dispose of diapers without harming the earth - Israel's Exotech Bio Solutions claims that these diverse goals are all attainable using the naturally derived, super-absorbent polymers (SAPs) that it has developed.
"Most super-absorbent materials are acrylic byproducts of oil," Exotech co-CEO Mendy Axlerad explains to ISRAEL21c. "This presents many disadvantages, from high costs to environmental harm. We developed a new way to make super-absorbents from natural materials and chemicals, using a technology based on water."
When they get wet, SAPs swell and form a gel that traps fluid. Unaffected by the fluctuations of oil prices, this technology is considerably cheaper, uses less energy to produce and results in a fully biodegradable material with many potential applications.
A pill for weight loss.

Four years ago, Exotech partnered with Boston-based PureTech Ventures to form Gelesis, a corporation that developed a pill to treat obesity using Exotech SAP. The pill expands in the stomach, causing a feeling of fullness, and is eliminated after several hours.
"We raised $20 million, and have just finished safety testing in humans with very good results," reports Axlerad. "Now we are in phase two, seeking confirmation that the concept works in helping people reduce their weight."
Scientists at Israel's Volcani Institute are testing Exotech's agricultural product, an SAP-filled reservoir that sits under the soil and provides plant roots with precisely the amount of water they require. The present top-down system of drip irrigation can be wasteful, especially when you take evaporation into account.
"This takes water control from the agriculturist to the plants," says Axlerad. "They know when to absorb water and when to stop. Our product can reduce water consumption by 60 to 80 percent, which is of interest not only in Israel but all over the world." The SAP itself degrades into ammonia, a natural fertilizer. After several agricultural cycles, it would be possible to stop using chemical fertilizers entirely.
Allowing patients to leave the hospital sooner.

Another Exotech SAP could revolutionize the treatment of open wounds, burns, pressure sores and chronic ulcers. Dressings have to keep such wounds at a specific humidity, absorb exudates and introduce medication, all in a sterile medium.
Ordinarily, this requires hospital monitoring. But according to Axlerad, Exotech's self-sterilizing SAP material can perform these functions self-sufficiently, enabling patients to return home and to work quickly.
A research team at Tel Aviv's Beilinson Hospital is ready to begin testing this material once adequate funding is obtained.
Attracting investors is the final hurdle between technology and application. Founded in late 1999 as a research and development firm, Exotech operates on private capital. Axlerad and co-CEO Zvika Meiri together own 80 percent of the six-employee company.

Investments needed for large-scale production

Lack of investment funds has stalled the implementation of large-scale production of Exotech's patented material for "green" child and adult diapers and safe, super-absorbent tampons and nursing pads.
Testing on the material produced in the company's small Kiryat Gat facility, south of Tel Aviv, was completed by a German laboratory and major diaper manufacturers have expressed interest in replacing the oil-derived super-absorbents they currently use. But so far, Exotech hasn't secured enough capital to make sufficient SAP for a test-marketing run.
"To start production of SAP for personal hygiene products, we need an investment of $5 million, but the profit would be $1.5 million, after tax, at the end of the first year. This is a very profitable potential because we use cheaper raw materials," says Axelrad.
He and Meiri are mulling two solutions: Creating subsidiary companies to serve each niche market, similar to Gelesis; or putting more money directly into Exotech. Neither partner wants to move the business out of Israel.
"If we cannot see any other solution, maybe we would," concedes Axelrad, who served 25 years in the Israel Air Force, adding, "I am hopeful we can be successful here."

17 November 2009, Raleigh, NC – Developer and manufacturer of knitted medical textiles Knit-Rite Inc. is to expand its facility in Richmond County by investing more than $1.1 million at its plant in Ellerbe. The company specializes in circular and flat knitted medical socks and hosiery and the expansion will initially create 24 new jobs.
Knit-Rite, which is headquartered in Kansas, produces prosthetic and diabetic socks, compression hosiery and orthotic products. It owns Therafirm Compression Products in Ellerbe, which operates as a separate division and currently employs 44 workers.
Speaking to North Carolina News Network, Chris Vering, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer said: “Knit-Rite is not only committed to expanding our business, but to investing in the local community. We are grateful for the incentives provided by the state of North Carolina and Richmond County, as they will help in that expansion and allow us to continue to support local economic stability.”
The company is said to be receiving a $24,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund for the expansion. Knit-Rite plans to modernize and expand the Ellerbe facility.

5 October 2009, Sydney - Australian speciality fabrics manufacturer Colan is working with V8 supercar teams to test the use of a revolutionary new lightweight fibre for the Australian championship following its successful use in Formula One cars. The new fibre, Innegra, is used in a high performance yarn that, when combined with carbon fibre, can improve the toughness of the cars while decreasing their weight.
"This is on back of the Innegra’s use by the new Brawn GPs Formula One team, which has won seven Grand Prix in this season and after the Singapore race this weekend is 42.5 points ahead in the championship. But at the moment the names of the V8 teams are under wraps while they carry out the tests,” said Genelle Coghlan, CEO of specialist fabric producer Colan.
The fibre, developed by US company Innegrity, won strong praise from the Brawn GP management executives. “When Innegra composite is damaged there is a tendency to tear and pull out fibres from the matrix rather than form sharp debris” says Gary Savage, Brawn GP Operations Director. When cars collide this reduces the amount of debris that splinters off, reducing the possibility of tyre damage and further crashes. Because Innegra also helps to better maintain the integrity of parts, the damaged cars may not have to pit immediately to make replacements, saving precious seconds in the race.
Ross Brawn, Team Principal at Brawn GP, said he was pleased with the performance of Innerga in his team’s cars. ”Strength, durability and reliability are all crucial for every single component on a Formula One car and Innegrity’s product more than meets our expectations. We look forward to continuing the good work this season," Mr Brawn said.
Colan CEO Genelle Coghlan says that while her company is working closely with Innegrity in the practical development of the fibre, it is in early trial stages for the as-yet unnamed V8 super car teams. “As a specialist fabric producer I am proud to be a part of development of this fibre and its innovative applications, both internationally and in Australia," said Genelle.
"As it is a tough, flexible and easily woven fabric that it is lighter than glass, aramid and carbon, Innegra has the potential for a lot of innovative applications, particularly in sporting goods.
"Colan will launch Innegra into the Australian market in the coming months, although already we are currently in talks with Australian surfboard shapers and other watercraft makers about some of its possible uses outside the automotive industry."
Innegra is a high performance fabric for use in ballistic, composite and rope applications. The fibre delivers light weight and toughness at a competitive cost compared to other high performance fibres, and has been used in combination with carbon, aramid and polyethylene fibres. Innegra fibre is being tested in a range of sporting goods applications from surfboards, tennis racquets, bicycle frames, baseball bats, kayaks, canoes and more.

Tough new fire-resistant coating materials called HIPS –hybrid inorganic polymer systems – are being developed by CSIRO researchers in Melbourne. HIPS coatings can withstand temperatures of over 1000°C compared to current commercial coatings used on building materials and structures which break down at between 150-250°C. They contain an inorganic geopolymer resin, and a small component of polymer additives.

ISLAMABAD: A five-year textile policy unveiled on Wednesday offers about Rs87 billion cash subsidy to the textile and clothing sector to boost exports. It envisages plans to boost textile exports to $25 billion from the current $17.8 billion by 2014.

The policy, approved by a special cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, was announced by Textile Minister Rana Farooq Saeed Khan.

The hefty package for the sector carries special duty-drawback rates, besides repayment of earlier research support, subsidy on long-term financing loan and development and other subsidies.

The policy focuses on export promotion measures, instead of steps to increase production and revive the ailing industry.

Without amending the rules of business, the government has issued two policies for the promotion of exports — the four-year trade policy announced in July focussed only on non-textile products.

The textile policy does not mention any specific target for sub-sectors.

There is also no mention of increasing production which has reached a saturation point and is producing low-quality products.

According to analysts, Pakistan’s textile and clothing sector sells its products cheaper than Bangladesh in the international market. ‘How come you expect foreign investment in a sector which produces low quality products?’ they said.

Under the new policy, the textile industry has been exempted from loadshedding. It will also enjoy priority in gas allocation like the fertiliser sector. An amount of Rs2.5 billion has been allocated to make export refinance available at five per cent.

An amount of Rs44 billion as special drawback rates will be provided to value-added textile exports for two years -- Rs17 billion in 2009-10 and Rs27 billion in 2010-11.

The proposed rates include one per cent of the FOB value of exports on processed fabric, two per cent of the FOB value on home textiles and three per cent of the FOB value on garments.

In addition, exporters achieving an increase of 15 per cent will get one per cent additional drawback. Another Rs5.4 billion has been earmarked for earlier refunds of research and development subsidy for the sector.

An amount of Rs4.5 billion has been allocated to continue monetisation of customs duty of PTA to offset additional cost for users for the current year. A decision about this duty will be taken by the National Tariff Commission during the year.

Another Rs5 billion has been allocated to convert long-term loans on the same pricing as applicable to the LTTF scheme together with a grace period of one year on both existing and converted facilities, without the facility of refinancing. Textile machinery will be zero rated.

In order to encourage women’s participation in the industry, the government will pick two regulatory costs to employers -- social security and EOBI. The cost of this measure is estimated at Rs2 billion for the current year.

The government plans to treat local sales of yarn and fabrics to large exporter as deemed exports. For this purpose, small producers will get one per cent drawback on levies and unadjusted taxes on sales to export houses which will cost Rs2 billion.

The government has set a target to increase the rate of conversion of cotton from $1,000 to $2,000 over the next five years. A textile investment support fund and technology upgradation fund (UTF) will be set up. An amount of Rs1.6 billion has been allocated for the UTF for the first year. However, this fund will go up to Rs17 billion by 2014.

Under UTF for capital intensive projects, the government will pick up 50 per cent of interest cost of new investment in plant and machinery with a maximum of five per cent. For small investments, government will contribute up to 20 per cent of capital cost as a grant.

An amount of Rs1 billion has been earmarked for infrastructure development for 2009-10 in public-private partnership. More industrial estates will be established, besides developing clusters.

An amount of Rs1 billion has allocated for skill development initiatives. A comprehensive training plan will be worked out.

A legal framework will be developed to specify standards and testing requirements, prescribe disclosure requirements and other matters relating to practices and methods relevant to the sector

The principle of cascading will be implemented while ensuring adequate protection to the local industry and removing anomalies. All regulatory bottlenecks will be removed. Market access will be increased through free trade agreements.

The government will provide necessary support for branding, grading, labelling and other activities that would add value to the textiles chain. An insurance scheme will be introduced to protect local exporters from unforeseen losses and help the industry in IT-related issues.

The policy will focus on certain sub-sector issues from fibre to garments, including ginning, spinning, weaving, knitting, processing, fashion designs, handloom and handicrafts, carpets, technical textiles. Specific schemes will be launched, mostly on public-private partnership basis, to upgrade and improve these sectors.

The persistent problem of contamination and trash content will be addressed through enforcement of the standards laid down in the Cotton Control Act and Cotton Standardisation Ordinance. Measures will be taken to develop other vegetable fibres (jute, flax etc.), wool and sericulture for supporting diversification within natural fibres.

Textile research gets more funding.

Focus on processing, quality of fabrics

COIMBATORE: The Union Ministry of Textiles will increase its funding for Textile Research Associations from this year.

Joint Secretary of Textiles J. N. Singh told The Hindu that the annual funding would be increased to Rs. 10 crore for Textile Research Associations (TRAs) from this year.

The TRAs received about Rs. 2-crore annual support now.

He said the focus would be on applied research such as processing, improving the quality of fabrics and fibre. The Ministry was receiving proposals from the research associations on the potential projects that they could take up. Further, the Textile Ministry was in talks with the Ministry of Science and Technology to see if additional funds could be allocated for textile research.

The TRAs were also identified as Centres of Excellence for different types of technical textiles.

“We are working on a Technology Mission for Technical Textiles,” he said.

The SITRA (South India Textile Research Association) Employees’ Union here appealed to the Ministry of Textiles to sustain its support to the TRAs so that textile research and the industry benefited.

Our beaches are full of garbage thrown by tourists near our beaches.I had a gimplse of this at Gokarna a tourist and a pilgrimage center as old as 2000 years.We can place Dust Bins near this beach so that tourists and pilgrims do not throw the water bottles near the beach by also placing fish nets to collect this where they accumulate in a particular spot.The Tasildhar head of this holy place was missing when I visited the place to tell him and ask him to come with me to see the filth near a beauty spot which mesmerizes the tourists.When inquired I was told he never bother's to even visit the temple once a week.The roads are another ugly patch not tared even after several years.The Chief Minister has handed over the temple administration to some Mutt and a dispute is pending in the court.How can such a place go neglected by our tourist department.It is a pity.The pictures shown needs your help.

The Minister of Textiles must immediately hand over the newly planned Textile Mill " FINLAY MILLS " at Achalpur,Maharastra to the highly reputed textile research association:-

We do have around half a dozen Textile Research Associations in various States in India.They do publish their research papers in all areas of Cotton,Woolen,Silk,Jute,Man Made Fibers,All operations in all areas of Spinning,Weaving,Fabric Processing,Knitting,Fabric Printing and accessories needed in the complete operations of the Textile Mills.

These Research Associations individually and in association organize conferences yearly at their centers alternately.Many Technologists,Mill Owners and all others connected with the working of the Textile Mills participate in these conferences.

Some of the Researches are done in their own pilot plants and also in select mills.Most of these Researches are in some areas a replica of the Researches done else where with minor changes and few are indeed original in use in the Industry.

The recession and the textile industry
This is a guest post for Mr.S K G Rao 
through an
IndiForum activity where blogger can
guest blog on other blogs.
The recession seems to have hit the
Textile Industry quite hard. 
There has been a
huge talk about lay offs in 
the past few
months mainly in India and China.
However, when I really 
think about it
the news is not as scary 
as the newspapers say.

Let me explain.

Especially in India, 
the textile industry
is the second largest 
job provider next
to Agriculture. 
If you see it that way
you know that the 
largest industries are
the ones that will show 
a lot more suffering
and lost due to the mass.
However, clothing is a 
basic and essential
part of every human 
being’s life these days.
It is not exactly like 
the dark ages you know.
And recession or no 
recession people will always
buy basic necessities 
like food, clothing,
medicines, etc. 
So why doest’t the clothing
industry pick up?
You see, it is also 
important to know that,
during tough economic 
conditions such as
being portrayed right 
now it is also
necessary to find 
ways to produce at
lesser costs and hence 
ultimately reduce
the burden on the consumers. 
This has to
be a continuous process 
right from
picking the cotton 
to the middle men
to the manufacturers 
to the retails.
There are quite a 
few examples on the
Internet and from 
entrepreneurs around
you who can tell how 
they got to be
bigger than what 
they started with during
tough times. Because 
they would have
found ways to 
innovate and help through
the tough times by easing 
the burden
on the consumers.
I am sure 
there are entrepreneurs
around you who have 
already thought
of ways to do so. 
I do hope so.

NEW DELHI: Industry chamber Ficci has called for stronger industry-defense partnership to promote innovation in technical textiles in India.

In its report on 'Opportunities for Technical Textiles in Indian Defence', Ficci said there is a need for faster testing and trial procedures for the approval of a product in Indian defense, especially for the textiles items.

Technical textiles refers to protective and special clothing used by defense forces, which is largely imported by the government.

The study reveals that personnel uniforms alone account for Rs 2,000 crore expenditure by the Indian defense forces. "Besides uniform, the industry could also provide parachutes, bullet proof jackets, geo-textiles for border roads and tents, thus offering a new and large market for the Indian textile manufacturers," the report said.

Ficci calls for stronger partnership to promote technical textiles.

University plans campus in India

INDIA could be the Jewel in the Crown as the University of Bolton bids to create its own academic empire.

The university is in talks to open its second purpose-built campus in India.

At the start of this academic year, the university opened a £1 million branch campus in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The planned campus for India would be a similar establishment.

Talks are still in their early stages and as yet no location in the country has been decided or the types of courses it would offer.

Senior university chiefs are also considering moves to establish a campus in Singapore.

India has been chosen because of the university’s reputation as a leading research institution in the field of textiles.

If successful, the move will strengthen the university’s international standing.

University of Bolton Vice-Chancellor Dr George Holmes said: “Having successfully launched its first branch campus in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, the University of Bolton is looking to develop its international presence.

“The University has ambitions to open branch campuses in India and possibly Singapore in the future. With our world-recognised research tradition in materials and technical textiles we already have strong links with India, but any discussions are at the very earliest stages.”

Professor Subnash Anand, from the university’s Centre for Materials Research and Innovation, is currently a visiting professor at universities in India.

Since being awarded university status in 2005, the former Bolton Institute has undergone rapid expansion locally and globally. It has bases in universities in China, Bahrain, Germany, Malaysia, Malawi and Vietnam.

And among the new universities, it is one of the leading establishments in developing global links.

The proposed campus in India would be modelled on the UAE campus, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The programmes are directly equivalent to those provided for students at Bolton and share the same exam boards.

University chiefs are also keen to organise exchange visits to give students in Bolton an opportunity to study at the new UAE campus for part of their degree course.

Dr Holmes said: “Our plans are to grow to give our students the opportunity to study overseas and become global citizens.”

It marks a further strengthening in Bolton’s relations with the sub-continent. The town is also planning to lead a trade mission to Mumbai next year.

Greater Manchester’s Chamber of Commerce Bolton manager Nigel McFarlane said: “The proposals are exciting for the town and will further the town’s standing as it develops important links with growing economies.”

Keith Davies, Director of Development and Regeneration at Bolton Council said: “We’re delighted to hear that the University of Bolton is looking to expand into India, which is consistent with the market opportunities we see for Bolton businesses. The university has been invited to join the Bolton delegation as part of the North-west trade mission, taking place in February, to explore the opportunities India has to offer. They have been a valuable partner in similar missions to China in the past.”

This mill has all the infrastructure required to start a Technical Textile College and Research University with a full fledged technical textile mill but who is to bell the Cat.Who is the Cat.

Private and Public company's who hesitated to venture in to Technical Textiles a decade ago are now boldly going in for Technical Textiles ventures either as their expansion plan or as green field projects.
Our country's premier Government of India managed National Textile Corporation is engaged in closing textile mill which was capable of Technical Textile products.
One such mill is "Sree Yellamma Cotton,Woolen & Silk Mills".
This mill which was taken over by an Ordinance by Government of India,and was having junk textiles machinery which was more like a go down of old textile machinery.
It was the wish of the Prime Minister at that period in 60's to provide jobs for the unemployed closed textile mills, the textile mills that were about to be closed,the owners of many textile mills who were threatening to close and few which were mismanaged and on the verge of closure.The Labour Unions of these mills had approached the Prime Minister to see that the workers would not face unemployment and become a burden to the society and the Government.
The Ordinance to Nationalize these mills was therefore inevitable.
Under the Umbrella of the Government " National Textile Corporation Ltd "which was a Government of India "Managed" undertaking and not a Government Undertaking was formed.A wise decision was taken to prevent millions of employees to go out of the purview of getting the benefits of Government Employees.
With Rapid Actions, East,West,North and South Zones were created and a Central Office to control all the Zones was in place at the Capital.
Rapid Actions created Rapid Reactions with Bureaucrat's taking wise and unwise actions.
Very soon Zones were dismantled and mills all over India were formed in to Subsidiary company's on the basis of Spindleage.
These Subsidiary company's had Chairman cum Managing Directors who had as many directors in Technical,Finance,Marketing and Personal,who in turn had as many officers as they liked and everything was out of control in few and in control in few resulting in profit in few,marginal loses in few and heavy loses in few.
At the helm of everything was the Chairman a highly respected gentleman respected by the textile industry who was a PhD in Textiles from UK but he had a Bureaucrat as the Managing Director with unlimited powers.Soon the Chairman quietly was out of the big family of all types of highly intelligent and ignorant people managing all the mills all over India.One of the mill victimized was:
Shree Yellamma Cotton,Woolen & Silk Mills
This mill which was working well was planed for greedy unwanted expansion with mismatched project plan and equally mismatched textile machinery from as many as seven different textile machinery makers for a single project.The product mix planed was not started due to a set of machinery not received in time.Even if the machinery was installed the market price that was taken was inappropriate due to market not accepting the quality as it had no reputation for it.The project for the mill had ignored the Quality Testing Instrument required to test the end product in house.If it was included perhaps the project would have become nonviable.
The mill slowly but steadily improved the quality and was recognized as a supplier of consistent quality of the product.There was new product mix with a tag that said Money Back if product was inferior and had the seal of quality of Bureau of Indian Standards ISI.Synthetic and cotton blended products.Pure synthetic yarn for Industrial use " Technical Textiles " was introduced.
Artificial Wool products were in good demand which was produced after getting technical processing details which were obtained unofficially through friends from mills which were manufacturing such product.This experiment was a instant sucsus in the market.Few more products were under planning but the subsidiary office which was responsible for sales found it a hard task to market but were grappling with it.
The mill introduced cost control measures,Workers participation in management was working well and labour rationalization as per industry norms was in force.The person guiding the mills has received recognition from the world body of "Textile Institute" Manchester,UK.Further a " Asia Hong Kong Award " was given to the mills.One Hundred Percent of mills production was under ISI certificate.
The Mills Reputition was Super amoung the mills under it's category of mills in
the Subsidiary of seven mills.

The mill was for over seven years under a Technically Qualified person with vast experience.He was transfered and the mill went through such unwanted transfers till it reached the distingtion as the worst mill.
One fine day the last worker left the mills with a packet of VRS in his hand.
The mill gate were shut for ever.

They won't give up they are starting a new mill at our Ex-Priminister's home district HASSAN.
It is a Green Field project.

A Report in the News Paper " The Hindu ".
DAVANGERE: Another cotton mill is on the verge of closure in Davangere, which was once considered the Manchester of Karnataka as it had a large number of cotton mills. The Sri Yellamma Cotton, Wool and Silk Mill, which is close to celebrating its golden jubilee year, may shut down in the next few days.

The Yellamma cotton mill, which was earlier owned by a private company, sustained losses and was almost closed down around five years ago.

Debts.

However, the mill has accumulated a debt of over Rs. 42 crores and is not in a position to continue functioning.

The mill reportedly offered a modified voluntary retirement scheme to (MVRS) to its employees. Only a few employees will continue to work in the mill till formalities of closing the establishment are completed.

Efforts are on to provide compensation to the workers. There are around 309 workers at the mill and of them 115 are permanent staff members.

According to sources at the mill, the NTC does not plan to hand over the mill to private companies on contract. Of the 53 mills of the NTC, only 10 are said to be registering a profit and five other mills are running on no profit-no loss basis. The cotton mills in the district have been spinning yarn from indigenous cotton, of medium and short staple kinds, for over six decades.

Though cotton is largely purchased locally, the bigger mills used to import cotton to spin yarn of a higher thread count. The cotton mills used to manufacture long-cloth, shirting, dhotis, saris, towels, and bed sheets.

According to a resident here, the demand for the cloth produced at these mills was so high, people used to queue up outside showrooms of the mill to place orders.

NTC does not mention how the mill ran in to a Debt of 42 Crores.

The mill was paying 25 % of it's income as interest to NTC on the Loan given by NTC,while the Norm for Interest payment in Textile Industry is 4 to 6 %.Why did NTC give such a huge Loan ?.Which was the unjustified reason for the mill closure.How much of 42 crores was received by NTC?.

Has NTC made any Investments Like the one mentioned hereunder in any mill it managed for over 15 years.

They started buying machines like vegitables from any tom dick and harry.

MUMBAI (Reuters) - SEL Manufacturing Co said it would invest about 5 billion rupees to set up a technical textiles park in Himachal Pradesh.

The project would cover around 100 acres of land, create 10,000 jobs and cover the entire range of technical textiles including hygiene products like wipes, diapers and surgical clothing, the company said.

The firm has applied for government approval to sanction the project under the integrated textile park scheme, it added.

By this time the project work would have already started.

The foundation stone of Finlay Mills is over and it is anybody's guess as to when the mill will go on production with 48.000 spindles and 144 shuttle less Looms producing 60.000 meters of cloth per day.
The mill also has 4000 kgs of yarn dying capacity per day.
The mill has 48.000 spindles which can meet the weaving requirement partly.
The mill has to get yarn from outside to utilize the dying capacity fully.
This Finlay Fiasco has Rs.236 crores estimated to cost for 48.000 spindles and 144 shuttle less looms,which means the entire cost for the project works out to approximately Rs.5.5 lackhs per spindle,what are the items included in the mills for complete project including the infrastructure?.[ of course they can't advertise. ]

What sort of products can this mill produce ?.
What short of fabrics are in short supply to our country citizens ?.
Will this Finlay Mills produce fabrics cheaper than our private mills ?.
Are we getting suiting & shirting manufactured by Raymond's, Reid & Taylor, Bombay Dyeing, Century.Arvinds and others ?.
Will it produce the most popular fabric Jeens ?.
A total of Rs.1155 Crores awaits 22 mills for modernization !!.
Each mill gets Rs.52.50 crores and how will they use it ?.
If NTC is giving Rs.52.50 crores to each mill and if these mills are under joint venture,will the unfortunate or fortunate private party joining this joint venture also shell out the same amount in each mill ?.
The advertisement says it will generate 12.02 million direct jobs by 2012.
NTC has under its control 22 mills so each mill will have 0.54 million employees?
NTC has dispensed with 59.017 workers under MVRS by paying Rs.2,118 crores in about 80 textile mills which were nationalized to provide jobs.Can we say that not one of these mills could be made as a green field project ?.

Textile Institute in Karnataka is Engineering College with a Principal in Textiles.
The Government of Karnataka managed Technological Institute of Textiles,which celebrated it's Golden Jubilee with out any deviation in it's curricular activities of bringing out the best textile technocrat graduates,masters and Ph D's has now become a Engineering College offering courses in Computer science,Civil Engineering and other pure engineering courses.There is no permanent teaching faculty in newly started courses.
It has only 5 permanent textile teaching faculty.
This is a disgrace to the founder's of this Pure Textile College of Karnataka.The Institute which was a gift to the textile industry by the ruler's of erstwhile Government of Mysore needed upgrading to a Research Institute in Technical Textiles and a College with new machinery of every type in the manufacture of Textiles,Technical Textiles and Non Wovens.
The Institute stands with out any improvement in it's infrastructure.The century old textile machinery and the chemical laboratory has been cut off from electric power supply as the power bill is not paid.
The students cannot see the machines working let alone to have the knowledge of even knowing how to start the machine.
The existing class rooms will not accommodate new increased students in newly added courses.The Govt may build in the adjoining old soap factory but it will be a vertical structure with out the look of a college of international standards.and may take a few years.
As of now there is no open space for students for sports and social activities,except to walk around the adjoining vast open gardens of Cubbon Park.
Even the teaching faculty has been deprived of few good professors ,who are transfered to New Engineering colleges started in a hurry by the politicians in power who knew their day's in power being numbered.and the fate of the New Engineering Colleges are now governed by the Principals who are Textile teaching professionals.
A detailed review of this Institutes's functioning is now a urgent need of the hour.Is there a hope to see this Institute as a High Tech Research Institute and a Technical Textile College with a Technical Textile full fledged Mill.
We are aware of Crores of tax payer's money being given to few Textile Research Institutes's.
Why not few crores to this Heritage Institute.
Let some body in power take a look at this Majestic Institute.
We the old students of this institute hope for the best.

Intelligent textiles, variously known as smart fabrics, electronic textiles, or e-textiles, have attracted considerable attentions worldwide due to their potential to bring revolutionary impacts on human life. Despite many promising progresses in this exciting newly emerged research field, there still exist a number of important obstacles. One of the most challenging issues is the conflict between the flexibility of the textiles and the need to incorporate sensing and computation modules. To address this critical issue, an innovative intelligent textile technology is proposed. The central hypothesis is that practical intelligent textiles can be realized by integrating fabrics with flexible transducers/electronics that are made using a unique, ‘flexible-skin’ technology.

The unique features of the silicon-based flexible skins are extremely desirable for intelligent textiles. A novel approach of making intelligent textiles by integrating the silicon-based flexible skins with textiles is proposed. The most important advantage of this novel technology is its compatibility with current MEMS and IC technologies, since MEMS devices (micromachined transducers) and ICs can be fabricated on the silicon wafer before the formation of the skin. This not only saves significant R&D efforts by avoiding re-invention, but also enables the integration of abundant sensing and computational capabilities offered by the silicon-based technology.

In order to be integrated with textiles, the original flexible skins are modified and a new perforated structure is proposed as schematically shown in Fig. 1. The new flexible skin consists of 4 components: (1) silicon islands that host sensors, electronics, and bonding pads; (2) metal interconnect wires between silicon islands; (3) polymer layers that sandwich silicon islands and metal wires; and (4) stitching holes etched through polymer layers, which allow the direct sewing into fabrics. One of the fabricated silicon flexible skins is shown in Fig. 2 (a). It can be easily twisted and bent without breaking the interconnect traces and silicon islands as shown in Fig 2 (b)

The flexible transducers/circuits made by the proposed method can be directly embroidered into textiles. It is worth noting that the stitching methods and patterns have substantial impact on the mechanical properties and robustness of the assembled fabrics. Numerous stitching patterns and methods, which have already been developed in the textile industry, will be an excellent resource to exploit. The following picture shows one skin stitched onto the surface of textiles using conductive yarns. The electrical contact was made by conductive epoxy.

To study the mechanical properties of the assembled intelligent textiles, diffused silicon strain gauges were integrated on silicon islands as shown in the following picture. These strain gauges enable in-situ measurement of the strains experienced by the silicon islands during stretching, twisting, or bending.

NEW DELHI: India's technical textile market could grow four fold to become a $37-billion industry by 2020, provided issues such as lack of investment and absence of research and development are addressed, a report by industry body FICCI said.

According to the FICCI-
Technopak report, the Indian technical textiles market has been registering a growth of 11.25 per cent, which now stands at $8.3 billion. The growth of the sector is, however, marred by factors like lack of investment, absence of high quality R&D and database, it said.

"The lack of mandatory rules for use of technical textile products, certification agencies, design standards, guidelines and skilled manpower are also hindering growth of the sector," the chamber said.

Technical textiles are materials and products used primarily for their technical and functional properties and not for use as apparels.

Of the 12 technical textiles segments, the report identifies buildtech, geotech, meditech and protech would drive the growth of the sector.

"The demand for geotextiles and protective textiles is set to grow manifold in view of the growing infrastructure and increasing use of fire retardant textiles in various applications," the report said, adding consumption of geotech in the next five years could be around Rs 10,000 crore.

Cotton Testing Machines Required.

1)Fiber Length Tester - On line application - Rapid Test:-
a)This Tester must be with latest improvements in Computer technology and electronics and must have high accuracy and reproducibility meeting ISO quality management requirements.It should be for use in cotton,man made and all natural fibers.There must be for use not only in the college laboratory but also for 'online' use in the mills.It should be fully automatic and there should not be any chance for operative or sampling error.The need for rapid test say 10 samples in 10 minutes is essential.Calibration need or material should not be essential.Conditioning and testing need must be absent.Must be portable.
b)Measured Parameters must Include:-
i ) Upper Length.
This corresponding to 2.5% span length of filograph or HVI.Settings at Draw Frame can be optimized with this.
ii) TC-LCT Length.
This is close to mean fiber length and provides an eastimate of fiber breakage at various stages of processing,also this indicates the fiber fractionation achieved at Comber.
iii)Fiber Hooks.
Total number of leading and trailing hooks in a sliver,which is needed for optimizing number of Doubling passages and Doubling and Draft at Draw Frames.
iv)TC-LCT Length X Fiber Hooks.
Required to know the Hook Length.
vi)Short Fiber Length.
10% This valve gives an indication of Fiber breakages in processing.
vii)Short Fiber Amount.
This Indicates the ratio between long and short fibers.
Higher breakages in processing lead to amount of short Fibers.
viii)Short Fiber Gradient.
This value indicates fiber breakages(a lower value means more breakages.)

3)Testing Equipment for Cotton Classifying System.
CCS is a fiber laboratory to determine Micronaire value,maturity,linear density,fiber length distribution,tensile strength / elongation,degrees of whiteness and yellowness as well as neps,trash and dust content.It is applicable for raw cotton in order to classify cotton as well as sliver and roving in order to perform tests for technological testing during spinning process in order to assess the spin ability of cotton fiber.The test report from this instrument must give:
i)Test report for each single test.
ii)Test report for all tests together in one report.
iii)Storing all data reports.
iv)Test coding for later analysis.
v)Force,ellongation and Leniar density of man made fiber tests should be possible.
vi)The Instrument must have USDA certification.
4) Fibrotest - Fiber Length and Strength Tester:
Key Fiber Characteristics of Cotton.
Fiber Length and breaking strength determine to a large extent the processing of cotton fiber in to yarn and the properties of the yarn itself.
Fiber length is usually measured on a bundle of fibers according to the Fibrograph system.This test is based on the optical scanning device and delivers various parameters characterizing fiber length distribution.
Fiber length is measured on fiber bundles also as the fiber bundle strength depends on the number of fibers in the bundle.The Instrument chosen should therefore must be very highly accurate.

5)Instrument for measuring:-

There are many more testing instruments for testing yarn,fibers of so many in natural and man made and fabrics also in apparels and technical textiles that even in one research organizations we cannot find.

The university will have the status as "DEEMED UNIVERSITY"
The semester will start with the first batch of students,who will all attend the introductory function and get individual university course kit.(This will contain everything the student must know regarding the course syllabus,dress code,rules and regulations,various punishments for violations.Awards for merit etc.)
Few facts for a good start befour the syllabus is given.
In the year 1995 at a major International Exhibition,Technical Textiles was launched to reflect the growth of technical textiles and soon developed a simple taxonomy that has been used ever since to describe the scope of this new industry and marketing sector.
To start the first semester the number of students who are qualified with a degree in Textiles are only eligible.
The number of students will be 30 for beginning the activities of the college economically.
As all the students are qualified textile technologists,we can right away start with "Technical Textile" subjects.
The students should submit the syllabus they have studied in the university that they have completed their B Tech (Technical Textiles) and this will be scrutinized by the admitting university for M Tech (Technical Textile ).The syllabus must include such subjects which are Textile Costing,testing,fabric structure,corporate planning,business management,HRM,Statistical & Quality Control Systms,Textile Standards for InternationalQuality,Industrial Engineering, Calculation & Methods of stock in process,Humidification & Air Conditioning,Industrial & Labour Laws,Export Rules & Controls,First Aid Training,Fire Fighting,Scientific Management systems,Use of Stock Market & Shares,etc........If they are not in the syllabus,a entrance test covering the subjects,("The entrance test being mandatory") will be held befour admission.

With in each of the headings are literally hundreds of products and applications for textiles,some traditional,some replacing other well established materials and techniques,and some have been newly created by the properties and capabilities of textile materials and structures.All products regarded as technical textiles with extremely demanding specifications to which they are made are tested to international standards.
Just for example,the medical and hygiene textile markets ranges from high volume disposable products for baby's nappies,feminine hygiene and adult incontinence through to extremely specialized and high valve textile products for use in blood filtration,surgical sutures,prostheses and most recently,scaffolds for new tissue growth.
To cover the 12 areas in the listed subjects it has to be 3 subjects for each semester.

FIRST SEMESTER.

AGROTECH.

STUDENTS WILL BE TAUGHT ALL TOPICS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS MENTIONED AND WILL UNDERTAKE PRACTICAL FIELD TRAINING AND VISIT THE AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY AT THE NEAREST PLACE AND TAKE NOTES ON THE ACTIVITIES IN THE UNIVERSITY.TEXT BOOKS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE IN THE COLLEGE LIBRARY.

Applications for technical textiles in the Agrotech sector include all activities concerned with the growing and harvesting of crops and animals. The principal function of most agricultural textiles relates to the protection of either food produce, animals or land.
End-uses range from crop production (cereals, cotton, tobacco, etc), through forestry and horticulture (fruits, vegetables, trees and flowers), to animal and poultry rearing and fishing.

Ground Cover
Ground cover/ Weed Control Fabric is made from UV stabilized polypropylene yarns and is manufactured in two types, 100 gsm and 108 gsm. The polypropylene Ground Cover/ Weed Control fabric is available with green marker lines at 12 inches (30cm) intervals. The Ground cover/ Weed Control Fabric prevents weed growth and allows air circulation. The fabric protects the roots from the spread of fungus and bacteria. It is permeable to air and water and is resistant to mildew and rotting.
Ground Cover / Weed Control fabric is used in various applications such as landscaping, green houses, nurseries, shade structures, etc

Woven from long lasting UV stabilized polypropylene tape yarn. It will block out sunlight and reduce photosynthesis preventing weed and unwanted plant growth.
Its specially profiled threads allow water to drain away quickly, reducing pounding. Many grades have colored lines woven into the textile to assist nurserymen neatly layout their stocks. To this end the material is tough enough to withstand reasonable pedestrian traffic in outdoor areas, polythene tunnels and greenhouses. Being a woven product it will be prone to fraying if cut or punctured, however in the UK you could expect the premium products to last for 5 – 8 years. It is often used by Allotment Societies to keep unused plots clear for future members. Woven ground cover is ideal for use under decking etc.

Technical textiles in various contexts are often referred to as performance textiles or functional textiles or engineered textiles or high-tech textiles.

Technical Textile fiber: Almost 90 % of the fibers(link to textile fabric) utilized to make technical textiles belong to the category of conventional fibers and the fibers specially developed to specifically use in technical textiles are not only expensive but often have limited applications.

Technical Textile products: Within the composites industry, woven, knitted braided, non woven(link) and wound reinforcements produced from glass, carbon fiber and organic polymer materials like aramids are presently accepted as technical textile products.
